On 14th February, 1915 the 2nd Northamptonshire battalion of  24th Brigade, 8th Division left their billets in La Gorgue, a few miles to the north of La Bassée and moved into the front line at Laventie where they remained until relieved on 17th February. George Scott was killed on 16th February but the battalion diary provides no information about casualties. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries.
